Titus 1:1

Paul opens this letter with a self-description he uses nowhere else: “a servant of God.” In other greetings he calls himself a servant of Jesus Christ. Here the wording reaches back to the language Israel’s Scriptures used for Moses, Joshua, David, and the prophets, people who belonged wholly to the Lord and spoke at His bidding. Joined at once to “an apostle of Jesus Christ,” the double title holds lowliness and commission together. Paul claims no independent standing, owns nothing in himself, and yet arrives bearing the authority of the risen Lord who met him outside Damascus and sent him to the nations.

The fullness of this greeting, written to a trusted co-worker, serves a practical end. Titus was laboring in a young and unsettled field where his instructions would be questioned and resisted. A letter opening with so complete a statement of Paul’s credentials would be read aloud in the Cretan congregations, and its hearers would understand that Titus acted under apostolic direction. To set aside his counsel would be to set aside the man who sent him, and beyond Paul, the Lord who commissioned Paul.

“According to the faith of God’s elect” most naturally states the aim of the apostleship: Paul serves in order to bring forth and strengthen faith among those whom God has chosen. “Elect” recalls Israel, the people called to carry God’s saving purpose to the world. That calling now rests on the community gathered around Christ, Jew and Gentile together. In Paul’s usage election is God’s gracious initiative, answered as people hear the gospel and believe; it never makes preaching unnecessary.

Faith is paired with “the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness.” The knowledge in view is personal recognition and embrace of gospel truth, and that truth has a recognizable direction. It produces godliness, a life that reverences God and reflects Him in ordinary conduct. The phrase anticipates the entire letter. Crete’s false teachers would claim to know God while living disorderly lives (1:16). From the first line Paul insists that truth rightly received cannot be separated from the character it forms.

Word / Phrase Notes

δοῦλος θεοῦ (doulos theou) — a servant of God

In ordinary Greek a doulos was a slave, owned by a master and answerable to him alone. Paul usually qualifies the word with “of Jesus Christ”; the phrase “of God” here echoes the Old Testament habit of calling Israel’s leaders and prophets the Lord’s servants. The title therefore unites complete belonging with honored commission: the servant has no rights of his own, yet he speaks for the Master.

ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας τῆς κατ’ εὐσέβειαν (epignōsin alētheias tēs kat’ eusebeian) — the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness

Epignōsis denotes recognition and personal grasp of something, here the truth of the gospel. The qualifying phrase identifies the kind of truth meant: truth that accords with and leads to eusebeia, reverent devotion to God expressed in a godly manner of life. Doctrine and conduct belong together in the Pastoral Letters, and this opening phrase states the principle concisely.
